Summertime and the livin's easy

What songs make you feel like it's summer? They might talk about how you need to laugh when the sun is out, or how you are well qualified to represent the LBC. They might discuss the finer points of riding in the drop top with the top down or how if everybody had an ocean across the USA, then everybody'd be surfin' like Californ-I-A. Perhaps it feels like summer when songs point out how we frolicked in our summer skin, or implore us to protect, embrace, engulf—remember the summer in Abaddon. The lyrics could mention something summerish, or even just the sounds might feel like warm sunshine to you for some reason.

In summary, tell us the songs that make you feel summery.

  1. The song Vapours by Islands is a song that always feels like summer to me, with it's warm organ tones and sunny horn section.

  2. Ease Back by Amos Lee: this says kickin' it on the front porch (wraparound style) with a tall glass of lemonade. The slow, easy ways of the south.

Fingerbib by Aphex Twin: this says long drives in the sun, windows down, feet on the dash, enjoying youth.

Infinite Arms by Band of Horses: this is the feeling of the last few nights of last week—everything's alive, but not in a hurry, kind of majestic and mysterious in it's warmth and endless sun.

Postcards from Italy by Beirut: summer travels. Tell me this doesn't make you want to spend the summer in europe. You can't. It does.

Swimmers by Broken Social Scene: if you melted summer into a liquid and it hardened as a record, this is what you'd hear when you put it in your player.

Sentimental X's by Broken Social Scene: summer loves.

Heaven's on Fire and also This Past Week by The Radio Dept.: pure summer candy-coated-coma dreams

  3. Beck, Que Onda Guero: It has melting popsicles.

  4. A few by My Morning Jacket:
    Phone Went West
    Dancefloors
    Wordless Chorus
    The Day is Coming

  5. Rill Rill by Sleigh Bells. Whether you like it or not, a few bars in you will suddenly find yourself sweating in a pair of Ray-Bans. It can't be stopped.

No Diggity by Blackstreet. This song was the star of Summer '96 and has played at least a supporting role in every summer since. It's still capable of stealing the show any year it pleases.

American Girl by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. A girl hung up on the promise of something bigger and better? Wanting to make the good last all night? Way to capture the simultaneous melancholy and magic of summer, Mr. Petty.

The Great Salt Lake by Band of Horses. It was summer 2006, we were driving to Tennessee in the hottest of heats and a salty-voiced man was singing a salty salty song about our salty salty lake. It's weird to hear this song in any other season.

    More later.

  6. Wet Cement by Morning Benders. The main guitar has a really hot tone to it and there is a air-shimmering-above-the-hot-pavement-feel to it.

  7. I meant Promises by the Morning Benders. Wet Cement works too though.

  8. It makes me happy to think that it in the early heat of next year, at the first stirrings of summer, when I want to put on something that gets me in the mood to brave the beatings of the sun, I'll reach for some Typhoon. They've done me right this summer.
